Freeport
Shop until you drop in Freeport, Maine.  Nearly 200 outlet stores and shops attract visitors from near and far, with the particularly famous L.L. Bean store standing proud amidst them all.  In fact, it was 1911 that L.L. Bean first opened its outdoor Mecca of sporting goods and clothing.  It has since become a world-wide brand.  Other businesses have since made their home in this charming Maine community.  Some of the largest names in retail now reside in Freeport, as well as charming boutiques, strip centers, more outlets and a nice mix of restaurants for all of the shoppers.  Many of the stores feature high-end quality merchandise for the discriminating purchasers.  People drive there from as far away as Boston, which is only two plus hours away.  However, the “Mainers” enjoy visiting Freeport from Portland or Bangor, on their quest for great deals.

In addition to all of the fantastic shopping opportunities, Freeport is a picture-perfect coastal community with a blend of colonial charm and scenic beauty.  In the spring through autumn, boats line the docks and waters of Casco Bay.  People can find a nice restaurant or bistro for patio dining with panoramic views.  Freeport is rich with historical significance, as it is believed to be one of the first villages to settle in Maine back in 1789.  The combination of bustling walkways, beautiful landings on the water and New England charm is prevalent throughout the community.

Freeport is known for its bed & breakfasts and country inns.  People who want the proverbial escape from the city life will find Freeport to be cozy and friendly.  Some visitors prefer a campground, legitimate log cabin or a traditional hotel.

Shopping isn’t the only great treasure of Freeport.  On the outskirts of town is the scenic splendor of Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park – with Winslow Park having its very own beach.  Families who have discovered this small slice of wonder like to bring picnic baskets and beach towels for a day overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.  Wake boarders claim to find pretty good waves at Wolfe’s Neck, but that’s just one secret that the adventurists will have to try for themselves.

Discover a natural phenomenon that was featured in “Ripley’s Believe it or Not”.  The Desert of Maine is really just that – a desert in the middle of unexpected terrain.  Glacier activity some 11,000 years ago deposited sand and minerals during the last Ice Age.  The unexpected Desert has become a fun tourist attraction with nature walks or golf cart tours.  Live trees half buried in sand, rare flowers, wild blueberries and mushrooms are indeed astonishing for group tours and individuals who are curious about this rare occurrence.  The Desert allows guests to create sand art with glass bottles and natural crystals.

Although the night life isn’t exactly happenin’… nearby Portland offers plenty of nightclubs and entertainment for the night owls who want leisure activity after hours.  Freeport does have a summer concert series, jazz music, art galleries and numerous restaurants.  A newly-constructed Performing Arts Center seats over 500 people to watch theatre, comedy shows, symphony orchestras or the film series.  The ambiance in Freeport is definitely on the mellow side. It’s a great place to meet strangers since most of the people here are like-minded on vacation.

During the holidays, Freeport hosts a memorable weekend festival that draws those people who like to combine the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping with the festivities of a celebration.  Locals dress up in fun costumes and host a slew of interesting entertainment, like: a happy parade; awards ceremonies; horse-drawn carriage rides; pictures with live characters and plenty of tricks for the kids.

The snowfall normally begins in late December.  Families take their children sledding or ice skating.  Most stores feature shorter hours after the New Year.  The main exception is of course, L.L. Bean, which has always featured 24-hour service throughout the 365 days of the year.  L.L. Bean just opened a new Hunting & Fishing store with an enormous 24-foot riverbed aquarium.  Inside the dome of the aquarium people can see real New England fish, sea turtles, crabs, lobster and other native species.

Despite the ups and downs of the economy, Freeport is one area in Maine that has continually thrived and survived.  The surplus of well-established businesses has continued to provide a healthy job market to the people of its State.  For everyone else, they are sure to find Freeport to be very “homey” and welcoming for a few days stay or more.

History lingers in Freeport's small town atmosphere. In an area of beautiful beaches, hills and brooks, you'll find surprises like the large sand dunes of The Desert of Maine (open early May-mid October), or the 1783, Barn Museum that has a World Sand Collection and marked nature trails.
