Maine

Maine, the easternmost state in New England. It is one of the most sparsely populated states in the USA. Although the water is decidedly cool, Maine's mostly rocky coastline and nearly 60 lighthouses make for some beautiful scenery. That, a comfortable place to stay, and a Maine lobster may be all you will ever need. Definitely worth a visit.

Get in:

If you're from overseas and coming in by plane, you'll most likely land in Boston, the major gateway to Maine. There is bus service from Boston to Maine's major cities, and the Amtrak Downeaster offers train service from Boston's North Station to Portland.

Get around:

A car is the best means of getting around in Maine. There are several car rental companies at the airport. There are also several bus companies serving the state:

  • Vermont Transit Lines
  • Concord Trailways
  • Cyr Bus Lines
 See:
  • Whalewatching
  • "Indian Summer"
  • Acadia National Park
  • North Maine Woods
  • Appalachian National Scenic Trail
  • Maine Lobster Festival
  • Grafton Notch State Park
 Do:
  • Lake and ocean swimming
  • Surfing
  • Hiking
  • Camping Bicycling
  • Kayaking
  • Whitewater canoeing
  • Snowmobiling
  • Historical sightseeing
 Get out:

Boston can be easily reached. So are other wonderful states in the area.

Maine is filled with the cutest bed and breakfasts near some of the popular hiking trails but typical hotel chains can also be found. As someone who has visited these trails, it would be a good idea to look into the beautiful accommodations some of these bed and breakfasts offer to the tourists. If the Radisson is more of your style, there are plenty of discounted rates with AAA that can be booked online by any number of the online hotel reservation websites. Also, there are many resorts and spas as well as cottages and cabins that can accommodate an entire family or too!
» Whitewater Rafting In Maine
By Brian Link | Published 07/24/2008 | Maine | Unrated
Whitewater rafting is a great activity for the whole family to enjoy. You can even share this experience with your close friends. Rafting is most commonly done on whitewater rivers and other types of rough bodies of water so that you, your family, and your friends get to feel all of the thrill and excitement that you expect. Doing this sport became considered a recreational activity in the mid 1970s. Since then, it has become more common for people to take part in this sport, and it has changed much since then.
