Latvia, located in Eastern Europe. Tourists can enjoy the wild beauty of Latvia`s unspoilt sea coast, which is 500 km long and consists mainly of white, soft sandy beaches. Forests, which cover approximately a half of Latvia`s territory, offer many nature trails and nature parks. There's so many wonderful things worth coming to Latvia for.
Get in:
Latvia has joined the Schengen agreement, which means that you can enter on a European Union Schengen visa and there are no longer any ID/passport controls on the EU borders. Citizens of many countries, including Australia, Canada, United States, Mexico, New Zealand, do not need a visa to enter Latvia for up to 90 days. If your country is not included in the list and you need to get a visa, it can be tricky. Applications will take 7 days to process, or can take as long as 30 days if additional information is needed. It is also expensive.
Coming by plane will take you to the Riga International Airport. There are bus (0.40 LVL) and taxi (<10 LVL) connections to city center. Only one cab company operates from airport, so look for red taxis on the ground floor near the parking lot.
By train, SJSC Latvian Railways offers services to and from Latvia.
Eurolines and Ecolines provide the bus services.
Get around:
Air Baltic flies from Riga to Liepaja International Airport. It costs 18.60 lats from Riga to Liepaja and 10 lats from Liepaja to Riga. Sometimes there are huge discounts allowing to get from Liepaja to Riga for as cheep as 4 LVL. Liepaja has direct flights to Hamburg and Copenhagen, too.
There are several car rental companies in Riga. Renting Soviet cars are cheap alternatives. Remember that you are required to drive with your headlights on regardless if it is day or night.
There are a vast network of bus connections around Latvia. Buy a bus ticket at the bus station or on bus when boarding. If you have luggage ask the bus driver to put it in the trunk. It depends on the bus company if they will charge extra. There are express bus connections to major towns, which can save time considerably. Be ready though for crowded outbound buses during Fridays and Saturdays.
It can be useful to go by train if you need to connect to such towns as Jurmala, Saulkrasti, Jelgava, Ogre, and Daugavpils.
If you want to ride a bike, you are advised to do so during the early morning when there is not much traffic. Remember to wear your safety gears.
Hitchhiking in Latvia is generally good. The roads around Riga present the largest obstacle, unless the city is your destination - there is no clean "by-pass" road, and a considerable amount of local traffic makes hitching very difficult.
