Big Island

Big Island, the island of Hawaii comprises over half of the area of the state of Hawaii in the United States of America. To avoid confusion with the state, it is almost universally called the Big Island.

Get in:

Kona International Airport and Hilo International Airport are the major airports in Big Island. There are a few direct flights from the mainland, mostly from California, but it is more common to arrive via Honolulu or Kahului.

Hawaii Superferry, a private company supported by the Hawaii state government, which current runs high-capacity catamaran ferry services between O‘ahu and Maui, plans to open a O‘ahu - Big Island service by 2009. There really is no dedicated inter-island service in Hawaii.

Get around:

Renting a car is a good way to see the island. Renting a 4WD is best since many of the Big Island's finest sights are only accessible by 4WD. Theres not much transportaion in Big Island but you can walk or ride a bike to get around and it will be fine. Just don't attempt to explore far places since you might tire.

Introduction

There's no place on earth quite like this handful of sun-drenched, mid-Pacific islands. The Hawaii of South Seas literature and Hollywood films really does exist. Here one will find palm-fringed blue lagoons, lush rainforests, hidden gardens, cascading waterfalls, wild rivers running through rugged canyons, and soaring volcanoes. And those beaches -- gold, red, black, and even green sands caressed by endless surf - a perfect place for spending holidays.

Ecologically diverse and sparsely populated, the Big Island of Hawaii is larger than all the other Hawaiian islands combined. Hawaiian rentals allow visitors to discover wonders from snow-capped mountains to rainforests to deserts. Best known for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to the longest volcanic eruption in recorded history, the Big Island caters both to those who crave adventure and to those looking for luxury, with the flotilla of resorts dotted along Kohala Coast. The birthsite of King Kamehameha I and the Mookini Heiau (sacred sacrificial site) are located on the North Kohala peninsula. Hawaiian heiau sites remain sacred today. Lapakahi State Historical Park is a partially restored Hawaiian coastal village which is the setting for daily activities, including storytelling and reenactments of early Hawaiian life. A 262-acre populated marine preserve is also nearby.

Hawaii, often called the Big Island, covers 4,038 square miles (10,458 square kilometers). The idyllically beautiful island of Hawaii is the youngest of the Hawaiian isles and also, by far, the largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago. The "Big Island," in fact, is still growing. Kilauea volcano has been spewing molten lava since January 1, 1983. From your private Hawaii villa you'll find several wild volcanic beach parks along the Big Island's southeastern point. Along the way, you'll pass Lava Tree State Monument, a fascinating forest of lava tree skeletons. Family fun is available all year round on the Big Island. Hawaii house rentals on Big Island's western shores lure sturdy hikers and skilled kayakers. Snorkeling, SCUBA diving and glass-bottom boat cruises into the sacred and pristine bay are available at Napoopoo Beach.

Formed from hot molten lava and the earth’s seismic shifts, the Big Island of Hawaii has settled down and cooled off to become an attractive destination for couples, families, and traveling groups of all kinds. Natural wonders and exotic flavors, sights, and sounds make for fine sightseeing, and activities that range from beach-going to volcano trekking will keep you and yours constantly enchanted by your surroundings. Hawaii has several great choices when it comes to picking a spot to unpack your suitcases, but be assured that you can’t go wrong with this bigger-than-life island that has a little bit of everything.
