Chile

Chile, a South American country bordering countries Bolivia and Peru and Argentina and even has claim to some portions in Antarctica. Home to the largest swimming pool in the world. Located at the San Alfonso del Mar resort in Algarrobo, you will have to swim around 2km to complete a single lap.

Get in:

Passports are necessary when entering the country. American, Canadian, Mexican and Australian tourists need to pay a “reciprocity fee” of varying amounts. This is for tourists entering by plane. Tourists from other countries do not need to pay the fee.

When entering the country, tourists need to fill out a tourist card that allows them to stay for up to 90 days.

The most common entry point for overseas visitors is the international airport of the capital Santiago (Arturo Merino Benitez Airport)  that offers the best connections compared to the other airports of Chile.

When already in South America, you can take a bus from the neighboring countries along the borders.

Get around:

By plane, airline companies like LAN, Sky Airline and Aerolineas del Sur can take you to the remotest part of the country.

The bus system is very impressive and is an excellent way of getting around. It just takes long though because of the stops. They also have a cross town micro bus called “La Micro”. To travel by la micro, you need to buy a card called BIP and have it charged with cash.

A “Colectivo” is a mix between a micro and a taxi. These small cars have routes and get around quicker and more comfortably.

There is also a metropolitan railway system that is a reliable way of getting around the city.

Hitchhiking is not at all hard in Chile. You just need the patience. Although it is impossible to hitchhike from big highways, the smaller, scenic routes are easier. Just let them know you're a tourist by your backpack and try to put a flag on your bag. They love talking to foreign visitors.

By Andrew Chaundler | Published 12/19/2007 | Chile | Unrated
Chile is renowned for its inspiring and romantic landscapes that vary so dramatically from Patagonia to the Atacama Desert. It is this beautiful wilderness of lakes, volcanoes, forests and deserts that lures most people who travel to Chile on holiday. But off the well travelled tour routes of Torres del Paine and San Pedro de Atacama, Chile is full of scarcely visited natural wonders and fascinating archaeological sites. A good example is that of the Chinchorro mummies of the Atacama, the oldest mummies in the world, predating their Egyptian counter parts by 2000 years!
