Jamaica, an island-nation in the Caribbean, located to the south of Cuba and to the west of the island of Hispaniola. Its indigenous Arawakan-speaking Taíno inhabitants named the island Xaymaca, meaning the "Land of Wood and Water", or the "Land of Springs". Jamaica's resources include coffee, papaya, bauxite, gypsum, limestone, and sugar cane. Add to that their beautiful beaches, spectacular flora and fauna and wonderful tropical climate that are popular to tourist worldwide.
Get in:
By plane, you can come in from either Norman Manley International Airport (IATA: KIN) (ICAO: MKJP) in Kingston or Donald Sangster International Airport (IATA: MBJ), (ICAO: MKJS) in Montego Bay, both servicing hundreds of flights a day. There are also smaller airports for private planes at Negril and Ocho Rios as well as in Kingston.
You can also use boats but be sure that it's operated by a hotel or tour company. Fishermen may offer you a ride but you might also be overcharged.
Get around:
Renting a car is a piece of cake thanks to the presence of international car rental agencies. Driving is on the left hand side, Jamaica being a former British colony. Roads are not driver friendly in Jamaica and extra caution is advised. Riding a bus can save you a lot and is considered to be the cheapest alternative. Guided tours are very good with several notable stops along the way. Don't forget to tip the luggage handlers.
If you really have to take a cab, take a “route taxi” which is basically a local's car. It's way cheaper than the usual tourist taxi. This would be the equivalent of a bus in a big city. It's always packed with people but then again, that's where the fun is and those people are also glad to have you aboard. Talk about friendly. Don't hesitate to ask for directions. Jamaicans are very helpful people.
You can travel by air too if money is not an object to you. Jamaica has some small airstrips where you can get in and out. Since there aren't too many charter companies, it's best to book in advance, even for just a day.
