Truckee

Truckee is a nice little “mountain” town along the Lake Tahoe region in California. Located just east of the Donner Pass on Interstate 80, Truckee is an easy entry point for travelers from the Bay Area to the region. Several ski resorts, three Sierra Club huts and the Pacific Crest Trail are nearby to give visitors a great time.

Climate:

Truckee's warmest month is July with an average maximum temperature of 82.7°F (28.2°C) and an average minimum temperature of 42.4°F (5.8°C). January is the coldest month with an average maximum temperature of 40.9°F (4.9°C) and an average minimum temperature of 16.3°F (-8.7°C).

Get in:

When driving to Truckee, I-80 allows access from Sacramento and the Bay Area from the west, and Reno to the east while SR 267 heads north into Truckee.

Although Truckee has an airport, it does not offer commercial flights. Reno's airport is the closest at around 36 miles away. Sacramento's airport is also an option but it is about 120 miles away.

Amtrak's California Zephyr travels to Truckee on a daily basis. Best be reminded though that there is no ticket outlet in Truckee.

Get around:

Just walking will do when you're in downtown area. You can take a car if you plan to go around and further away.

See:

  • Donner Lake

Do:

  • Ski
  • Swim in the lake
  • Sightsee
  • Rock climb
  • Hiking
  • Play golf
 Get out:

Tahoe National Forest, offers hiking, hunting, fishing, skiing, off-highway vehicle usage, camping, boating, and swimming. You are required permits for some of these activities so it would help to check first with the local ranger station for details.
