Savannah is a beautiful southern city located on the northeast coast of Georgia. With its easy access by way of Interstates 95 and 16, and US 17, Savannah is a popular tourist site and even served as an excellent location for the Olympic Yachting events. If you are familiar with the book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil", you may easily recognize certain landmarks as noted in the story. Savannah is also a wonderful place to enjoy true Southern cuisine.
River Street is one of Savannah's famous locales, and harbors some of the city's finer restaurants and an array of specialty shops including my favorite, Savannah's Candy Kitchen. For casual dining in a 1790's Cotton Warehouse, try The Exchange Tavern & Restaurant at 201 E. River Street. They feature fresh seafood and steaks along with hearty sandwiches sure to satisfy.
River House Seafood specializes in the "Art of Fish", serving a variety of excellent fish and seafood dishes including lobster, as well as succulent steaks and chicken. This is the restaurant my wife and I dined at just before I proposed to her in a country church parking lot in Darien, Georgia, on US 17. Needless to say, it's the perfect restaurant for a romantic interlude, and the food is pretty good, too! River House Seafood is located at 125 W. River Street.
And no visit to Savannah is complete without dining at The Pirate's House, located one block from the Savannah River at East Broad and Bay Street. Originally opening as an inn for seafarers in the 18th Century, The Pirate's House is one of Savannah's most intriguing restaurants, with 18 separate and distinctly charming dining rooms. They offer an extensive menu and scandalous desserts. Once noted by a leading publication as "One of the 34 Best Restaurants in the USA", The Pirate's House is a nationally renowned restaurant that the whole family can enjoy.
Enjoy Savannah's beauty, history, culture, and her cuisine. Visit the museums, take a trolley or carriage tour, or stroll along the Historic Waterfront and see where all of Georgia began! I can think of few other cities in this region that make me prouder to be a Southerner than Savannah.
