This coastal Georgia city has also adapted and modernized in the most important ways ensuring equal opportunities for all, while still keeping its Southern charm and hospitality.

Find the Old South - and the New - in Savannah

Georgia has many opportunities for tourist. From the outdoor adventures in the North Georgia Mountains, to shopping in Atlanta, to touring old towns throughout the state there is something for everyone. Georgia travel has never been better and this is especially true in the old city of Savannah. Made famous in recent times by the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil book and movie Savannah has adapted to hold thousands of visitors at once while still keeping the ability to make each guest feel like family. This coastal Georgia city has also adapted and modernized in the most important ways ensuring equal opportunities for all, while still keeping its Southern charm and hospitality.

When you come to Savannah you have many choices for lodging but the best bet is to stay in one of the cozy bed and breakfasts or old inns near the river. This author's favorite B&B is the Forsyth Park Inn, but the 17 Hundred 90 Inn also ranks at the top. If you are looking for a modern hotel check out the River Street Inn or the Hyatt Regency Savannah.

After you are check into your room take some time to leisurely walk the streets of Savannah. Spanish moss hangs from the live oaks creating an inviting and comforting arch over the old streets. Between the trees sits mansion after mansion. Some built two hundred years ago or more. Make sure to visit as many of Savannah's squares as possible as these mini gardens are largely responsible for saving Savannah from destructive fires and development. The history is alive and the city is at its best right now again joining the best of the old with the best of the new.

A favorite stop while in Savannah is Bonaventure Cemetery. This beautiful park holds the memorials of many of Savannah's elite. Sit on the bench next to Conrad Aiken's grave and share Madeira with him. Then walk to the grave of Johnny Mercer and remember his music and his influence. Look at the Wilmington River, near Mercer's grave, as you hum Moon River.

While in Savannah there are several must see homes including the Mercer House, the Green-Meldrim House, and the Davenport House. There are numerous ghost tours that will scare you and a real must do experience. Then there's the Telfair Museum of Art that displays many of Savannah's treasures like the bird girl and the bench from Forest Gump.

No matter where in the world you live Savannah is worth the effort. You won't be disappointed by this city that has managed to hold onto all that is good about the South while modernizing enough to include all the social changes that have made America great. Y'all come on down and see us.
